NExT Exam

Earlier students who completed MBBS from abroad had to give FMGE in order to practice medicine professionally in India.

According to the Times Of India, the health ministry has declared that from 2024 all students would have to give the NEXT exam arranged by the AIIMS (All India Institute of Medical Sciences) which will replace FMGE and NEET PG.

The main objective of the NEXT exam is to bring back the consistency of the cumulative evaluation of the country for the minimum common standards of training and education of a medical graduate.

This exam will be considered as a one-window exam as it is a licensing and competitive exam because of the following reason:

License: If you clear NEXT 1 it gives you the eligibility to practice modern medicine in India, register as a medical practitioner professionally and start your internship.

Competitive: The score of NEXT 1 will be used to evaluate your eligibility to acquire a seat for the postgraduate courses based on your ranking.

Steps of NEXT exam:

Below we have described the two steps of the NEXT exam along with what type of exams will be conducted.

NEXT Step 1

  • The first step of the NEXT exam will be the theory exam which would be conducted in December 2023.
  • This exam is to be written by the MBBS batch of 2019, interns and post-interns.
  • In step 1 all subjects of MBBS and final MBBS will be conducted in 6 different papers.
  • The minimum passing mark for step 1 is 50%.
  • The 2019 MBBS batch would be appearing for their university final practical exam after their NEXT step 1 examination.
  • You can only start your internship CRRI (Compulsory Rotatory Residential Internship) once you complete NEXT step 1 and your university practical exams.
  • Your internship would start in February 2024 and end in February 2025.
  • You need to appear for the NEXT step 1 supplementary examination if you fail even in one subject.
  • After the completion of your internship in Feb 2025 you are expected to appear for the NEXT step 2.

NOTE - if you are an intern/post intern writing NEXT step 1 in December 2023 then you will get your PG admission in May 2024 based on the results of your step 1.

NEXT Step 2

  • Step 2 is expected to be held in March 2025.
  • This step would have practical, clinical, and viva exams for the seven clinical disciplines and subjects.
  • This exam will be conducted in person by the respective medical university of the state which would follow the basic guidelines of the commission.
  • After this based on your marks in step 1, you would be taking your PG course in March 2025.

NEXT Exam pattern:

Step 1 -

  • It is a computer-based test comprising MCQs.
  • It will have six papers.
  • The total number of MCQs will be 540. The number of MCQs of each subject is mentioned below.
  • The subjects included are medicine and allied subjects (120 MCQ), surgery and allied subjects (120 MCQ), Obstetrics and Gynaecology (120 MCQ), Pediatrics (60 MCQ), Otorhinolaryngology (60 MCQ), Ophthalmology (60 MCQ).
  • You still need to study all other subjects as it is stated that Forensic Medicine & Toxicology (FMT) and SPM will be integrated into all papers.
  • 10% of the MCQs will be based on clinical aspects of Prof I and Prof II.
  • So you must study all 19 subjects of your prof years properly to clear step 1 with good marks.

  • Distribution of MCQs in Step 1:
  • 65% of MCQs will be clinical case-based.
  • 25% of MCQs will be comprehensive type.
  • 10% of MCQs will be recall type.

Hence it is essential for a student to understand the concepts and applications of each subject and topic.

Step 2 -

  • This step includes practical, clinical, and viva exams.
  • It consists of seven papers namely Medicine and Allied subjects, Surgery and Allied subjects, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Pediatrics, Otorhinolaryngology, Ophthalmology, Orthopaedics, and PMR (Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation).
  • This step will be conducted by the respective universities.
  • It is the university’s decision whether they would include cases, simulated cases, or OSCE for the practical exams.
  • The final result of step 2 would be declared as pass or fail.

The number of attempts in NEXT:

  • Step 1 and Step 2 will be conducted once every year.
  • Apart from that complementary step 1 and step 2 exams will be conducted a month after the respective step exam.
  • If you fail to clear the step exam as well as the complementary exam then you can appear for the exam next year only
  • You need to clear step 1 and step 2 within 10 years of your admission.

  • NOTE - If you appear for the complementary exam and clear it then the marks of your complementary will be considered.

  • If you clear step 1 on the first attempt but are not happy about your scores then you are allowed to reappear for Step 1 to improve your score.
  • However, the ultimate score is usually the average of the last three attempts. Hence every attempt needs to be taken seriously.

Factors like exposure to international medical practices, potential career opportunities, and personal comfort with a foreign environment influence the decision. However, one's budget and NEET scores are crucial factors, as studying in India might be more cost-effective for some, while others may find Georgia's offerings more aligned with their aspirations.

Yes, internships completed as part of the MBBS program in Georgia are generally valid in India.
